Semi-Precious Stone Jewelry - Flare and Fashion at Affordable Prices

If you appreciate the qualities of real gems, but aren't one of the fabulously rich people who drip with diamonds, you might consider jewelry that contains semi-precious stones. The term is somewhat of a misnomer, since many of the gems that fall into this classification, have a beauty of their own, that can surpass some of the "real" things. Among the semi-precious stones you might find in rings, pendants, and earrings, are the following:

Amethyst - This charming stone that ranges from a light, almost lavender color to deeper, dark shades of purple, is a member of the enormously large quartz family. Colored quartzes are classified as a variety of semi-precious stones according to color, including tiger's eye, onyx and citrine, which is heat-treated amethyst.

Garnets - A stone that comes in an amazing range of reds, and red blends, due to the particular grouping of six minerals that constitute the garnet's makeup. Pyrope and almondine are the combination that produces the rhodolite garnet, which ranges in color from deep raspberry pink, to an almost purplish red. This particular garnet is common to the Asian countries.

Sapphires - Technically, red sapphires are known as rubies, while the traditional sapphire is a pure, deep blue. However, due to their mineral content and structure, there are lesser known sapphires of other colors, and even some stones whose internal structure reflects light differently, according to the angle at which it strikes the stone. These are known as "color change" sapphires, and not considered to have the value of the blues or reds.

Topaz - Most people associate this stone with a rich, Madeira sherry color, when the most valued are actually a lighter, less intense yellow. They are a member of the quartz family, having a crystalline structure, and at times can be mistaken for citrine, whose color is dictated by the amount of heat applied to an amethyst.
