Monthly Birthstones
January: Garnet- The garnet is said to be the stone of constancy
or loyalty.
It comes in a wide range of shades from light pink to orange/red,
depending on their mineral content.
February: Amethyst- Stones of sincerity and honesty, the amethyst
comes in varying depths of purple, and is reputed to have gotten
its name from the Greek god, Bacchus, who poured wine over the head
of a maiden he had turned to stone.
March: Aquamarine- A variation of the beryl stone, they represent
courage and bravery. From the same waters that give the aquamarine
its name, comes the colors of blue to blue/green.
April: Diamond- A diamond or white sapphire stands for innocence
and purity. The diamond is rated the hardest of all gemstones, and
was said by the Greeks to be tears of the gods.
May: Emerald- These stones signifying love and success, are a distant
cousin of the aquamarine, also being a member of the beryl family.
Many beryls are green, but not all green beryls will be emeralds.
The stone is defined by its structure and inclusions.
June: Pearl- Pearls or the equally opalescent moonstone, represent
health and longevity. Natural pearls that are grown in the ocean
are rarely seen today. However one of the world's outstanding examples
of pearl necklaces is a 150" strand, once owned by the royal
family of Russia.
July: Ruby- A sign of contentment, this red stone can be transparent
and clear, or opaque and brick-colored. The name comes from the
Latin for "rubeus" or red.
August: Peridot- A delightful light green to yellow stone, the
peridot is seen as evidence of marital bliss. It is said to have
been a favorite of Cleopatra, who was also known to be fond of the
other green stone, emeralds.
September: Sapphire- The sapphire in its traditional blue form,
is thought to be associated with clear thinking or reasoning. Sapphires
come in other colors than blue, although red ones are the stone
known as rubies.
October: Opals or Tourmalines- These stones, which signify hope
and the future, offer a variety of colors and appearance. The opal
reflects light and shows itself in delicate pastels, while tourmalines
can be a wide range of colors from pink, to a green that mimics
the peridot.
November: Topaz or Citrine- In colors that range from light gold,
to a dark amber, these stones stand for fidelity and faithfulness.
The royal crown of Portugal contains a topaz of over 1600 carats,
which was once mistaken for a yellow diamond.
December: Turquoise, Tanzanite and Zircon- An interesting selection
of stones to represent prosperity and wealth, turquoise is the one
"true" stone amongst them. Tanzanite is the result of
heat treated zoisite, and Zircon is the man-made "diamond".
