What Are the Different Diamond Cuts?

To jewelers it means something else,
but to buyers the cut of a diamond
usually means the shape.

When people talk about the cut of the diamond, they are usually taking about the shape of the stone, as opposed to the manner in which the diamond has been cut.

There are a wide variety of traditional shapes including round, square, oblong, oval, pear, emerald and marquise, but it is generally the manner in which the surface of a diamond is shaped, including the number of facets, that dictates the "cut".

For example, a standard round diamond, which is generally seen as a point, broadening out to a round surface, has four parts. These are the culet, or smallest facet at the end of what appears to be a point. The lower portion of the diamond where it rises from the culet, is called the pavilion. The stone will then take a "turn", so that it becomes domed, and produces an upper surface called the crown. However, there will be a line or edge between the pavilion and crown, which is known as the girdle. On the top of the crown, will be a central facet, called the table.

In round diamonds, the most popular cut is known as the "modern brilliant", a stone that has a total of 58 facets, including the table. An "eight cut" is a stone that has eight facets on the crown, eight on the pavilion, plus the culet and the table for a total of 18 facets. In between those two, falls the "Swiss cut", a diamond that has only a total of 34 facets.
