How to Care For Your Diamond Jewelry
Keep your diamond jewelry looking
its best.
The most attractive feature of diamonds is their flash and fire,
something that is significantly dulled when a diamond becomes dirty.
Even though they are the hardest of gems, does not mean they aren't
as prone to collecting the same dirt and detritus as other types
of jewelry.
Many women will wear their diamond engagement rings, night and
day. And while this is perfectly fine to do, you must remember that
in the course of 24 hours, a diamond can be exposed to soaps, lotions,
creams, dust, and good, old-fashioned dirt that can gather in the
crevices of the settings.
A mild solution of dish soap and a used, soft-bristled toothbrush
will scrub away the accumulation of daily dirt, and remove the coating
that blocks light from reflecting through the many facets of your
stones. When it is clean, try not to touch the stones with your
fingers, because just like glass, they will become smudged with
the natural oils from your hands.
To keep your diamond jewelry looking its best, rings in particular,
avoid wearing it when there is any chance at all of hard bumps and
knocks. While they are a ten on the hardness scale of gemstones,
even a diamond struck at the right angle and right intensity, can
crack or chip.
Regular cleaning at home is helpful in preserving their glitter,
but once a year, you should have a jeweler check all pieces for
wear and tear, or potentially loose settings. You can also get a
professional cleaning at the same time.
