How to Clean Platinum Jewelry
Even though platinum is one of
the
hardest and most durable of precious
metals, it requires care and cleaning.
Platinum is one of the hardest and most durable of precious metals,
less subject to the scratches and discolorations of metals like
silver. Not only that, but its composition allows it to resist damage
by many chemicals like chlorine.
But just because your setting may be nearly pure platinum, does
not mean that it's completely safe to wear items like rings, all
the time. For safety's sake, it's wise to remove rings when doing
chores where you're likely to strike your hands against other objects,
or when they are exposed to harsh chemicals. Platinum is seldom
the only precious part of a ring, and the bangs and scratches can
damage your stones or pearls.
Generally speaking, platinum jewelry can be cleaned in the same
way as gold, with a mild soap solution, using a soft bristled brush
to clean in and around the settings for stones. Polish with a soft
cloth and store in its own compartment of your jewelry box, if only
to keep it from scratching other, softer items.
If you are wearing a tarnish resistant piece of silver jewelry,
make sure that is not coated with rhodium, a member of the platinum
ore family. Using a harsh, silver cleaner on rhodium will permanently
damage the finish. It is not recommended for platinum, either.
